This is another great product from Sony and I’m very pleased with this one. The TV is ideal for a kitchen or bedroom (I have mine in the kitchen). When I buy a product I like to do lots a research and narrow down the possible products. Out of the HD TVs I had narrowed down a list of Phillips, Samsung and LG – all round the 20″ size. I like to go down to a shop to view and listen to the TVs first before buying, and to me – the Sony looked and sounded the best.

I found that the Samsung was the smallest of my list of possible TVs and also looks very pretty, however as I found with the LG – the sound quality was poor with no decent bass. With the Phillips – I wasn’t too impressed with the picture, so while I had to reach a little deeper in my pocket I decided to go for the Sony in the end as the sound and picture seemed much better than the rest – it really does look brilliant! This is a big purchase for me but I like to get something that I’m completely happy with so I’m glad I spent the little extra.

The picture quality is pretty awesome, but going from an old CRT style TV I’m going to notice the difference! The sound is even better than my old TV which I thought wouldn’t be the case – so a pleasent suprise there.

If you are going to put the TV in a confined space, have a look on the manufacturers website and check the measurements. Be careful as sometimes they list two dimensions, one with a stand and one without.

I searched high and low on the net for the best price and at the time of writing Amazon is the cheapest. Delivery was great, I placed my order on Tuesday and the set arrived on Thursday at 9am, free delivery as well!

Warning! – Matthew Leve –
I purchased this t.v. in December ‘08. It worked great for just shy of one year and then it simply went dead: no picture, no sound, only turns on and off. If the t.v. still worked I’d have no major complaints, perhaps the greens and reds are a little off but I was able to mostly correct this with some customizing. And the sound is excellent, especially when compared to Samsung.
Update: I’m now trying to get Sony to replace the t.v. It was repaired and delivered yesterday. After watching it for about 5 minutes, the same problem happened…. No picture, no sound. Needless to say, the only thing that will satisfy me now is receiving a new t.v.

Here’s the problem. I contacted Sony 8 weeks ago to explain the difficulty we were having, spent about 2 hours trying to fix it over the phone to no avail. I suggested they give me approval to get it serviced, but they insisted I wait for a USB software update in the mail…. 6 weeks later after 3 incorrect address delivery attempts and more customer service incompetence than you can possibly imagine, I finally received the software update (I had them overnight it). And of course, it didn’t work.

Next we move onto the service phase where I am now in a holding pattern. I needed to get a repair breakdown and service estimate from the technician, but he wouldn’t give me one as he had no idea what was wrong with the t.v.: “No picture. No sound. Huh? Only turn on/off….” Now I am waiting to talk to his manager to get some document I can fax back to Sony along with all the receipts in order for them to approve repair service.

In summary, our t.v. has not worked for well over a month, I have wasted well over five hours talking to incompetent Sony representatives over the phone, and I have little hope of having a working t.v. anytime soon. Thankfully it is still under warranty (by only one week!). I am hoping I have no problems with my other Sony equipment in the future. In any case, this will be my last Sony purchase.

I did a lot of research and then a lot of shopping for this product and am very satisfied with the picture and ease of use.

As a non-techno guy I was a bit concerned about how I would be able to hook it up with my dvd, cable box and sound system but the instructions made this easy.

One item to remember is that no matter how high the quality of your TV it does not improve the quality or content of the product sent by the cable company.

I’ve been using this TV for about 4 months now. It’s a great TV with a great picture. I won’t bother repeating all of the technical stats since you can see them above, but suffice it to say that this TV has all the technical bells and whistles you’d want in terms of contrast ratio, refresh rate, etc.

In general Sony makes good products (although you do sometimes have to pay a little more for them). The Z series is their mid-range series – it’s better than the S, V, and some others, but doesn’t have all the features of the XBR series. This TV is the 4100 series, which unfortunately makes it just one model short of being able to do a lot of cool internet enabled things. For example, the 5100 model (and everything above that, including the XBR series) can stream netflix movies. I’ve also tried streaming video from a DLNA server and found it somewhat limited, While JPG images can display easily and you can play MP3s, (I got that working in just a few minutes), Sony doesn’t guarantee support for anything other than basic mpeg2 video format (and I’ve had little luck even getting that to work). Since most internet video is distributed in other formats, this means you’re going to have to get another device (HTPC, Bravia internet link, Roku box, Xbox, PS3, etc.), in order to get internet video. Depending on your plans for other home theater devices and budget, you may want to upgrade to the 5100 series or XBR for the additional internet based features, however if you’re like me and getting a HTPC anyway, then it doesn’t make sense to spend additional money for features you’ll have through other devices.

I purchased this TV February 2009, and it has since been shipped from S. Korea all the way to Portugal. been probably mishandled all the way around the world as well.
The Picture is amazing, i have read some minor complaints about some “greying” on the sides, i have none of that. I love this Television.

TV speakers are TV Speakers, what do you expect, better than nothing. i am not gentle with things i own, and turn it off and on repeatedly, or leave it on for extended amounts of time. i put TV’s through what Automakers put their cars through in the desert… and this TV has lived up to the challenge
